Water damage is not always immediately evidenced. In most houses, it develops silently behind the walls, floor, or ceiling. When it is too late, the damage will have been done. Here’s the thing. Neglect of early symptoms may result in expensive repairs and long-term structural problems. The effort to identify latent water damage at the initial stages provides you with an opportunity to remedy the situation before it deteriorates.
1. Stains on Walls or Ceilings
One of the first signs of water damage is discoloration. There may be yellow, brown, or even grey spots on walls or ceilings.
These stains tend to indicate a leakage above or behind the surface. It might be a roof problem, a burst pipe, or even condensation.
This only means that the water has already absorbed into the substance. The issue might be beneath the surface, although it is dry.
2. Persistent Musty Odors
A persisting smell of mustiness is a big red flag. This smell usually means there is water in the concealed places.
Molds and mildew grow in moist conditions. You may not see them, but you know there is something growing out of sight because of the smell.
When a room still stinks of dampness despite cleaning or airing out the room, then there must be some invisible water damage somewhere in the building.
3. Peeling Paint or Bubbling Wallpaper
Wallpaper and paint are sensitive to humidity. Leaks of water between walls rupture the bond between the surface and the material.
You might see some of the paint bubbling, cracking, or peeling. Wallpaper can be loose or wrinkly. Such changes are not occurring in vain. They tend to refer to the accumulation of moisture at the back of the surface.
4. Warped or Buckling Floors
Water damage in floors can be manifested very subtly. Wood floor covering can begin to bend or creep. Tiles also lose their grip even when the adhesive below is moist.
What this simply translates to is that water has been able to get to places where it is not supposed to. Moisture causes the expansion of flooring materials that results in distortion.
5. Surprising Skyrocket in Utility Bills
The leak can be detected by the sudden increase in your water bill. Unless you have changed your usage habits, the additional cost is commonly indicated by water escaping somewhere in the system.
Leaks behind a wall or even under a floor can remain unnoticed for a long time. Water will keep on flowing and causing damage during that period of time. Following up on your water bill is one way of detecting these problems before they become giant problems.
6. Mold Spots in Unusual Areas
Mold is not necessarily found in such apparent areas as bathhouses. It may grow in the corner, back of furniture, or along the baseboards. Small black or green spots can be harmless, but they are usually a sign of continuing moisture problems.
Mold needs water to grow. Should you find it, there must be a moisture-giving source about, which should be attended to.
